Sound & Wellness

The quality of sound around us significantly impacts our mental and physical well-being. Spaces with good acoustics can reduce stress, promote relaxation, and improve mood, enhancing overall wellness. People with medical conditions such as hyperacusis and misophonia, which make people sensitive to noise, can benefit from quieter settings. Part of Felt Right’s mission is to provide cost-effective, elegant solutions for managing sound and combating the effects of noise pollution using Felt Right's decorative sound-dampening panels.

Creating Inclusive Environments for Those With Sensory Needs.

Managing sound pollution is one reason to invest in sound-dampening felt tiles, but these panels are also effective in soothing those with sensory needs, which can affect 1 in 6 people. A majority of these people have invisible disabilities, which means their challenges are not often visible to the naked eye. Some of these include autism, PTSD, Down Syndrome, early-onset dementia, and more. Up to 15% of the population suffers from some form of SPD (sensory processing disorder). Felt Right is committed to creating environments that foster a feeling of safety, security, and inclusion with our best sound-dampening panels.

What Are Hyperacusis and Misophonia?

Hyperacusis

Hyperacusis is a hearing disorder that results in an increased sensitivity to a range of everyday sounds that most people would find tolerable. Those with hyperacusis may find noises like the humming of a fridge, the clatter of dishes, or even moderate levels of conversation painfully loud. This heightened sensitivity can lead to discomfort, pain, and avoidance of social situations or public places, significantly affecting one's quality of life.

Misophonia

Misophonia, on the other hand, is an emotional reaction to specific sounds. It's often described as a "fight or flight" response to particular noises, such as chewing, breathing, or tapping. These sounds trigger intense emotional responses such as anger, panic, or the need to escape, even when these sounds are objectively not loud or threatening. Misophonia can strain relationships and make social interactions challenging.

Our Solution

Our acoustic solutions, including acoustic sound dampening panels are designed with mental wellness in mind. They offer a visually pleasing and practical way to manage the acoustics in your environment, making spaces more comfortable for those with hyperacusis, misophonia, and anyone looking to reduce noise pollution in their lives. By dampening and controlling sound, our products help create serene spaces that promote concentration, relaxation, and overall mental well-being.

The 5 keys to Achieve Better Sound in Your Space

How Much Sound Will Felt Tiles Reduce?

While no acoustic tile can eliminate the causes of noise pollution, such as car traffic and wind noise, Felt Right sound panels are designed to absorb sound reflections off of hard surfaces with a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) of 0.35. This means they reduce the reflected energy by 35% on average wherever they’re placed. The absorption percentage varies for different sound frequencies. Our sound-dampening art generally absorbs frequencies above 300 Hz and performs especially well (60-100% absorption) in the range critical to human speech (between 1.4 Khz and 8 kHz).

How Much Surface Area Do I Need To Cover?

Depending on room size, we suggest covering a minimum area of either 3’ x 4’ or 4’ x 6’ with office sound-dampening panels to help reduce unwanted room noise. You'll notice the benefits of sound-dampening acoustic panels more when you increase the coverage area, which might be necessary if you experience hypersensitivity to noise. Larger spaces with hard surfaces will require more coverage. For a more accurate calculation, use our acoustic calculator.

Where Do I Place My Tiles For Maximum Benefit?

Any open wall is a good candidate for decorative sound-dampening panels. And every bit of acoustic treatment counts. Placing tiles on two adjacent walls to reduce reverberation in both directions can be very effective. Finally, if the sound source and the listener are in fixed locations, placing tiles at first reflection points using the mirror trick will maximize effectiveness.

How Do I Best Stop Sound Coming From An Adjacent Space?

Reducing sound coming from an adjacent space is a more complex issue to address and may require a multi-pronged approach. Our customers have found that covering the entire wall with noise-blocking wall panels can be an effective part of the solution. Keep in mind that it is also important to do things like seal up air gaps, as even tiny air gaps let in a lot of sound.

Can I Add More Tiles Later If I Need To?

Absolutely! Managing sound in your space is often a bit of a trial-and-error process. We recommend you purchase what you feel is reasonable for your space and your budget, especially if noise sensitivity is an issue for people in your home or office. You can always add more felt wall panels if you find that you prefer more sound absorption or if the layout or use of your space changes. It’s so easy to install sound-dampening panels that it’ll only take a few minutes to add even more sound-dampening power to your space. A quiet, calm space free of unwanted noise can be a game-changer for those sensitive to sound.
